i have filled a few condiment cups with sliced potato, the condiment cups were sterile enough for agar previously. however, if i could skip the whole process of making agar and sterilizing it, it would be kind of cool to be able to directly buy that from the store. so filling them was kind of a challenge, but if you use maybe slightly larger condiment cups you would be able to fit a whole slice. for now i just halved a few slices from the can and put them in cups. theoretically the canning process leaves them already sterile, so just dropping them into a sterile environment should allow a mostly contaminant free petri dish with very little work. time will tell i suppose! i'll post pictures if it works. i will inoculate them later tonight

none of the potatoes look ""bad"" right now and some are actually growing mycelium. it's wild. eat your heart out, agar. i don't know that i would replace regular agar with this but if for some reason you want to do agar work but don't have agar or a nice sterile environment then canned potatoes are a good enough substitute. condiment cups + canned potatoes are also a LOT cheaper than petri dishes and the ingredients for agar.

some of em went bad. probably cause i dropped them when transferring them to cups LOL. the rest look fine! i think this is a good way to do it, but i already bought the stuff to make agar and it sits better in the cups, so i will be going back to using that. i have a feeling that potato chunks would be better for colonization though, because if you had potato chunks fully covered in mycelium, then they have a nice head start when you put them in grain cause they have extra food that they are used to after it gets all mashed up. as opposed to agar where they kinda just grow around it.
